Ronan Mackey, the Workforce Development Manager at the Chamber of Commerce NT, has been working closely with Carol Zunker, the Sales and Operations Manager at The Job Shop. Their collaborative efforts have been directed towards assisting 31 Timorese workers who are part of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.

These workers have been provided assistance with setting up their bank accounts and procuring Telstra phones and SIM cards, all in preparation for their move to their workplace destination this week. Of these 31 diligent workers, 23 will remain in the Northern Territory (NT). They will be traveling to Central Australia’s largest Melon farm, Desert Springs Farm in Ali Curung, located about 350 kilometers north of Alice Springs.

The workers are scheduled to arrive on Saturday, 23 March, and will be preparing for the upcoming Melon harvest. Desert Springs Farm is renowned for its large-scale production, producing approximately 8,000 tons of watermelons annually.

The PALM scheme is a significant program that fosters labour mobility between Australia and the Pacific, and the Chamber of Commerce NT is proud to be a part of this initiative.
